you might save money with a pay-as-you-go phone, depending on your usage. If you don't use it much it does cost less than a contract or even a month-to-month. Target has those special refill cards that make it easy to add time, especially if all you have is cash.

ATT & Verizon now have month-to-month wireless service for about $55, or perhaps $65 to $75 with taxes and all. Verizon seems very up front about taxes and fees, while ATT is very vague and even evasive about them. Verizon seems to be the best rated wireless service overall and ATT almost the worst. The upfront cost is probably about $350 or so, since you have to buy the radio at full price. But it is great for internet anywhere and usually works better than hotspots, which usually have slower than molasses at absolute zero DSL connections.

When I had the time, I volunteered at a food bank and they gave me some free stuff from time to time. It saved me about $150 from my $430/month food bill (Yes, food is really expensive here in this part of California--almost as expensive as Hawaii!). Unfortunately some of the stuff is always on the verge of spoiling so it has to go into the fridge or freezer right away.
