There's a difference between finding solace in others who have their own issues ("I know how you feel about being shunned by your family because your gay, I'm transsexual myself") and finding and reciprocating sympathy for things that are more than just wierd, but off the deep end, simply because you've decided the since society is wrong in shunning you, they're wrong in shunning the other person ("I know how you feel about being shunned by your family because you wiped out a small island in Micronesia because they all eat liver fried, I'm transsexual myself").
Finding a sympathetic ear isn't the problem. It's when it turns into a spiral of "I'm okay, you're okay no matter what you do because we know society is wrong in all of it's morals" where the Survivor Spiral is.
