dolariI was watching a bit of Outlaw Star. I've been really digging it since it started showing on Adult Swim, mainly over Melfina. I recorded the first few episodes of the series (The first four, I believe), but kept watching because of that one character. Melfina, it seems, is the navigational core of the ship, and she floats motionless in a chamber where she controls the navigation and engineering portions of the ship. In The Polychronicon, Angie and Alice do roughly the same thing, although on a much more permanent basis. Melfina can actually leave the ship and do what she likes. Angie is the main core of this planet, and is physically implanted into the planet and runs the "General tenor" of the planet. She can't control individual actions, but can set the tone for the world. A side effect from this is that she can roam the world semi-corporeally, and can interact with people (Especially Zand, but as we'll see in later chapters, she often enjoys strolls among "her" planet, and even talks to passers-by). She literally is Mother Nature.
I just bring it up because I find the idea of the Human Brain as CPU for not just the human body, but directly interacting with things BEYOND the human body an neat thing. I don't know how Melfina runs, but the mechanism in the Earth (and many other planets in The Polychronicon Universe) uses the hands and feet as an input/output point, with the nerves within both of them feeding information and instructions directly into and out of the brain of the controller.
Angie: "It's not as horrific as it sounds. I rather enjoy it, actually. Sometimes you'll get a physical pain, like a cramp or an itch you can't get to because you are The Machine, but you get used to that after the first several hundred years or so. But to be able to roam the earth and listen to the trees and animals and THINGS as they talk to you is amazing. As of late, I've really enjoyed listening to the music of a young man who plays his guitar alone in the woods. The trees enjoy it as well...and I will probably talk with him soon."
