dolariEpisode II Non Spoiler Review. Safe for anyone who wants to go into the movie and NOT know anything about the movie plot-wise....
The Good
Yer gonna like this movie. Visually, the movie is stunning. Phantom Menace was eye candy, yeah, but it was limited eye candy. This time around, it's like someone put the wide angle on the CGI. Everything is so much more...open and expansive. Consider the Gungan/Battle Droid fight at the end of PM. It was just hills and sky. Now you get actual fully fleshed terrains. Familiar shapes are kicking in ship wise....soundwise you're going to start hearing more Luke-era sound effects. The plots are believeable, although Annikin's story is a little...forced...to me.
The Bad
It's still Lucas. My main problem with Phantom Menace was that there was a LOT of explanation to characters that shouls already know the facts. Lots of Tell and not enough Show. This time, it's how much of stuff just comes out of left field. Things that we need to know about, but it seems that the actors themselves weren't told of motivations and directions until JUST before they were filmed. So you have a character change midscene to something he wasn't before. The first half is talky, but t least this time, it's discussion, and not just throwing out facts and figures to people who should already know all that. And CGI Yoda puts in a better performance than some of the the other actors (although I'm sure they were directed this way). Also, while some consider this a good, I consider it a bad. The CGI is top notch...really is...but now it's inconsistent with Phantom Menace. Especially Yoda, who just isn't...Yoda anymore. He's Yoda II. Everything CGI in this movie is SO much better than PM that it's almost like you're not watching a sequel to PM. SW and ROTJ were consistent, AOTC is not consistent with PM. Some may think that's good. I don't.
The Ugly
C3PO. If you have nothing better to do with a character, put him in storage. Forced humor does not equal comic relief.
Mind you I really dig the movie...and the Good will more'n'likely outweigh the bad in the more spoilerific review tomorrow (with appropriate protection for you non-spoiler types)...I'm tryin gnot to get into plot specific stuff.
