Dinner most foul.
Jan. 23rd, 2005 09:07 amI love going shopping at ethnic stores. You get to try new foods, drinks, and sometimes even get a quick lesson in the history of that country by the cashiers. That isnt't to say I haven't been burned.
I refuse to eat Korean ramen anymore. It seems that everytime I make the ramen according to the instructions, I get a pasty soup with the same consistency (and taste) like mud. But that was the only ethnic store food I've ever turned away.
I can now add two more to the list:

This one blindsided me. When I poured the soup base (curry) into the water, it smelled soooooooooo good. Before I dumped the noodles in, I tasted the broth and it was just really really good. So in went the noodles - worst mistake I ever made. The noodles were "cheap" rice noodles, with seemed to have some kind of manufacturing and/or stale taste to them, and managed to ruin the broth completely. The curry itself dissapeared (which is hard to do with curry), completely overpowered by the really terrible noodle "taste" of whatever it was. Next time, I'm just gonna grab some Garam Masala, and make a broth from that without any noodles.
Pakola "Ice Cream Soda." I saw this hidden away in the corner of the freezer next to the (american) Coke cans and decided to give it a try. Now I'm sure the other flavors of Pakola aren't anything like this, but it definately tasted like Mango Ice Cream as filtered though an oil filter. I kid you not. The first taste you get is of metal...and THEN a few seconds later the mango ice cream flavor kicks through.

However, sometimes you also get the food that's a Nugget of Joy [tm]. Such as the Frozen Samosas I brought to Erin's party last night. Samosas are usually pretty big, about the size of a piece of chicken, but the tiny ones make for great "Indian Pizza Rolls." And I can usually eat one or two regular samosas and then I'm completely full. However, with them about the size of Doritos, I can eat them like appetizers (which is what they're supposed to be).

Oh man, this is good good good good. I love ginger candy, and pickled ginger (but not ginger snaps) and Dean of all people got me into this drink. Dean was the first of us to hit the Indian/Pakistani store back in 2002 (I was soley hitting the Chinese/Japanese stores) and was just going on and on and on abou thtis drink. It's been one of my faves ever since. :9
