Usually, when I go to Canada, I buy a few groceries there I can't get here. This keeps the US customs officials off my back as they've grilled me pretty intensely the two times I came back with nothing. Plus, it gives them a chance to scold me about fruits and vegetables (none of which I have with me), and gets it out of their system so I can move along. So what are some things I pick up?

I love my odd snacks, a bad habit I picked up from [livejournal.com profile] audaciousd when we were in Pennsylvania (which is famous for it's Really Odd Snacks). So when we're there, I usually pick up snacks I can't find anywhere else. When I forst went up last year, I made sure to get some Tandoori Flavored Doritos, but sadly, they're no longer made.

An honest to goodness Canadian Commercial for Tandoori Sizzler Doritos.

Thank goodness, though, Canada is still good with the odd snacks:

The Spicy Curry is REALLY REALLY REALLY freaking good. A little heavy on the salt, but otherwise taste like vindaloo on a chip. The General Tao one, wasn't really all that good. When I have General Tao/Tso's it's very spicy with a savory sesame taste. These just tasted like Bar Be Cue chips. Prolly won't get them again. The Piri Piri chips (aka African Birds Eye Chili) was also very good. About as spicy as any "Flaming Hot" chip from Lay's, but with an odd almost chickeny taste to it.

It's not just the chips I get, though.

One thing I get a lot of is Five Alive. I loved this drink as a kid, and it lasted all of about three years in Texas. I was REALLY surprised to see it in on the ferry to Victoria when I went up last year, and now I buy a good gallon sized drum of it everytime I'm up. What ARE the five fruits in Five Alive? Apples, Cheese, Broccoli, Pimento, and Piglets.

The other thing I almost always get is Shreddies. Emily bought some down to on her first trip and never took them back. I tried them and fell in love. They're a lot like Chex, but made from whole wheat, and slightly sweetened malt. For some reason you can't find much malt stuff in the US, hence no Shreddies. But damn, they're good. I prefer the diamond ones to the square ones, but I've heard they don't make the diamond ones anymore.
