The Romans have this thing for cheese and honey mixed together. The problem is, after my last Roman Cheese/Honey recipe (Baked Discs), I realized I didn't like cheese & honey together. Blech. So about halfway through making this I realized I may be in trouble.

But I LIKED these!

They're quite tasty. Terribly bad for you, being deep fried balls of cheese, the Roman equivalent of junk food. But, damn, it's good! :9

Roman Pastry Balls aka Globi

200g/7oz Cheddar Cheese
100g/3 oz of spelt flour (I used regular flour)
1 egg
Enough Olive Oil for deep frying (I used vegetable oil)
60g/2oz clear honey
1 tbsp poppy seed

1) Take the cheese and shred it.
2) Add the cheese and flour together.
3) Work the cheese into the flour until it feels like breadcrumbs.
4) Add the egg and knead into a dough.
5) Pull off pieces of the dough and roll them into balls about 1 inch around, about 15.
6) Heat enough oil to completely submerge the cheese balls. Hot enough for a light fry.
7) Fry 'em up.
8) Remove the cheese balls once the outsides become crispyish. Drain off the excess oil.
9) Heat the honey till it becomes runny and pour out onto a plate.
10) Pour the poppy seeds on another plate.
11) Roll the cheese balls in the honey, then the poppy seeds.

Enjoy!
