The story line I got out of it was Liu Kang won the 1st Mortal Kombat. The second was setup as a distraction in prepearation for the Outworld Invasion. Johnny Cage faced Shao Khan and lost (hence how he died, and MK3's invasion took place). MK3, I figured Liu won again, and after that, I wasn't really all that interested in how MK4 ended, I just played the heck out of it. :)
