May. 17th, 2013 03:50 pmJust lost a really good chance at a very excellent job. According to the interviewer, I was one of two final applicants and they went with the other because he had server experience on top of an equal-to-mine massive customer support experience.
That's...ow.
The search continues, but the well is starting to dry up. More on that later.

In person interviews: 8
Passed over: 4
Rejected: 2
Abandonned (no reply after three weeks of poking): 3
Waiting: 3
There are three more jobs I'm waiting to hear from. One looks sketchy but is just starting up. The other two were good, but not in my alley. And the well is starting to dry up. I only had one interview this week (Two last week, three the week before). Most of the jobs I'm finding are re-listings for jobs I've applied for and never heard back.
I'm beginning to think I'm setting my paycheck sights too high. But at the same time, I'm also wary of falling into the same trap of Seattle. I've rejected two jobs. One because it turns out it was three 12 hour days, and I couldn't do it medically. The second was because they severely undercut my pay ($10/hr).
I probably shouldn't have rejected that second run, and instead, run with it, while looking for something else. That way, I'd have some cash coming in, while still looking for something else. And, sadly, I'm thinking that my asking price may be too high for the jobs I'm applying for. I'm very wary of falling into the same trap that happened in Seattle. Hand-to-mouth paychecks are good if nothing changes, but you're one crisis away from having your finances destroyed. I need something that allows me to save or, I don't know, level up occasionally.
Just gonna keep on keeping on, but I'm hoping I don't end up like I did in PA - two years unemployed.

May. 17th, 2013 07:06 pmI've been back in Austin for about a month. Money is tight, so I hven't done many excusrsions into town, but have been trying to re-aclimate myself to living back home.
There are three main areas I've lived in. The Arboreutum area (akin ot living in the nicer parts of Redmond, for those in Washington), the Hyde Park area (imagine a slightly less pristine Greenlake, without the lake), and Webberville (which is like living in Skykomish, without the mountains). While I've been in Seattle five years, I really haven't lived in Austin proper in seven years, two of those being about 40 miles away in San Marcos (Think Renton).
When I go out for food, groceries, or to visit friends (something I haven't done much of, because of money and gas), I do tend to try and explore a bit. I'm happy to say that the Arborerutum area hasn't hardly chagned at all. Everything is pretty much where I left it. The Kerbey Lane Cafe is gone, but there are others. The Mongolian Grill changed its name, but is still there. And the character of the neighborhood hasn't changed at all.
Hyde Park is still Hyde Park, although it's gotten a bit "glossier." There's some serious gentrification going on around here, that's starting to close into Hyde PArk, which is kind of sad. Hyde Park was the hippie headquarters of Austin (in fact, there were more than a few sqautter houses around the area), and many of the nicer artsy stuff is beginning to dissapear. The 37th street lights at Christmas have stopped, the art pieces are few and far between (The volkswagen angel is still there, and the window to nowhere, but a lot of the other art pieces are gone).
Webberville is still Webberville - far away, and hard to get to.
The city itself is still Austin as I remember it. A few more skyscrapers along the river. Maybe a tad less wierd now that Leslie is gone, but the wierd still has a stranglehold on the city (As it should be). The drag is just as I remember it, and 6th street is thriving, even if Katz' is gone. The triangle is gone, though. A gigantic park has been turned into very ugly condos, but I guess you can't really stop change.
Haven't been down Burnet road, which, to me, is the soul of what Austin is. That road is like Aurora in Seattle - it's old-school Austin at it's best. Maybe I'll check that out tonight, and see if the Frisco is still there, and the Biker Octopus Skull....
