Aug. 2nd, 2013 04:13 amBack in the early 2000s, you might remember there was a couple of jobs that fired me for being transgendered. Once was doing XBox support for Harte-Hanks. The other was the Department of Transportation.
In the intervening years, I've shunned XBox stuff completely. I'll never buy anything XBox related, XBox labelled or XBox funded. I'm angry about it to this day. The DoT, though...it's hard to boycott a road system, or demand your taxes go to anything but the DoT. I'm still very angry about it, though.
As of right now, I have a job working with the DoT. I also have prospects with a delivery company and Dell (again!). I didn't ask for the DoT job. I applied for a job with the Railroad Comission through a temp agency who proceeded to shoot my resume to everyone they were contracted with. And I wasn't aware that it included the DoT.
When they told me the DoT was interested, I almost told them no. But before I could say anything, they told me the pay. $18/hr. So I kept quiet. If I got the job I'd be working offsite, and I was sure I wouldn't get the job anyways once they ran a check on me a the DoT and saw I was fired.
Yesterday, they told me I got it. And would be working, again at the DoT. That when I told them that I would accept the job (I desperately need the money), but that I'd been fired from there before. I used the "wrong" restroom and was told I needed to quit or be charged with sexual harassment. The reaction I got on the phone wasn't what I expected - empathy and understanding. Seriously, I didn't expect that. Instead of "Well, let's find you something else" I got "I can't believe they did that, let me talk with our HR department and determine what we can do to protect you this time."
I got that call this morning. The temp agency said I'm still on the job, at the jobsite at the gigantic rate of pay. They're super impressed by my abilities and being forward about working with the DoT again. Their response was "If anything, ANYTHING like that happens again, let them know. The agency's HR department will handle it. If I'm let go of the project, the temp agency THEMSELVES want to hire me for their own internal IT department. O_O
At the end of the call it really hit me - I'm going back into the Lion's Den. I'm angry about that. I'm postively livid until I see that pay: $18/hr. THEN I feel like a sellout. A very rich sell out, but a sell out.
The delivery company has kept in touch with me. I'm hoping to hear from them soon yay or nay. If they offer me a job, I will take it, for only $15/hr. Maybe I won't feel so much like a sell out. If I don't get it and I'm stuck with the DoT...well...we'll try and hold that bile down with $18/hr of Pepto-Bismol.
