Jul. 21st, 2014 02:57 amAh, Curse of Fenric. Still my fave episode of Dr Who, new and old (although Vincent and The Doctor is a close second).
Ace really shines in this. The Doctor completely underestimates her several times, and she calls him out on it each time. He seems to learn from each argument, as well, which segues nicely into the new more mature team they make in Survival. Not to mention the whole plot line involving the child, which the Doctor has nearly zero to do with, and is all about Ace.
Sylvester's Doctor is at his best in this one. Lots of chess playing (a theme in this episode) of putting pawns and pieces together to take down the opposing team. And the nastiness he puts Ace through at the end, is truly horrifying to see - how much he's willing to stoop to beat the bad guy. And while he apologizes, this also feeds into the steelier Ace we see in Survival.
It's much slower paced than New Who, but I find it just as riveting, if not more.
