So...this 90s era computer can run Windows XP.....barely. It can do 98, though.

Do you other techies think it's a good idea to put out on the network until the replacement PC shows up? It is this a zombie PC disaster waiting to happen?

You never forget your first Operating System.

I think trying to get that old PC online isn't going to work. All my equipment is at home, and my transfer options are VERY limited to get stuff on it.

The phone and Wii U are web capable, yes...but not very practical for long term use. I think I'm just going to need to wait until the new PC gets here before I can do anything.

Final tally:

Windows 98: Disc had disc rot, unable to install Windows.
Windows XP: Computer would reboot itself trying to get into the installer.
Knoppix: Runs, needs downloadable firmware to run Wi-Fi.
Gparted Live CD: Runs, needs downloadable firmware to run Wi-Fi.
Arch Linux: Runs, needs downloadable firmware to run Wi-Fi.
Ubuntu: kernel panic on boot.
Hackintosh OSX: kernel panic on boot.

I finally decided to give it up. I took everything salvageable from the PC then proceeded to trash it Hulk Smash style.

I highly recommend that to problematic, obsolete, and frustrating hardware. You still haven't fixed the problem. But you no longer HAVE the problem. And you feel better to boot.
