Mar. 24th, 2018 01:18 amIt's been kind of slow at work, but not really slow enough that I can sit down and play video games on the job (it's a thing we can do). So instead I've been reading old newspapers from San Antonio and Austin. Something caught my eye, while reading about the Fredericksburg Road, which is a very prominent road in San Antonio to this day.
I kept seeing ads for property near Sisterdale "On the Fredericksburg Road." This struck me as odd, because it was far too East for a San Antonio-to-Fredericksburg Road, and far too South for the Austin-to-Fredericksburg Road. Before 1860, there's just "The Fredericksburg Road" from 1860-1875 or so, there's a "New Fredericksburg Road" and "Old Fredericksburg Road" and then after 1875, just "The Fredericksburg Road."
After some research, I found that the "New" Fredericksburg Road was the one that exists today and the "Old" Fredericksburg Road is the old Native Pinta Trail. Using some modern day tools, I scoured the Texas General Land Office's archives for Bexar, Kendal and Gillespie property maps of the time, found an overlay of the the Texas Land Survey for Google Maps, and hashed out a very rough map of the "New" Fredericksburg road (which follows the current road fairly well, although veers off on the other side of Boerne), and one of the Pinta Trail/New Fredericksburg Road.
Looks like I have roadtrip #1 for my vacation back home! This link will get you an interactive map that traces the Pinta/Old Fredericksburg Road (roughly) than you can zoom down into street level....
