Jul. 26th, 2018 12:38 amSo, what happened, Jenn?
First off: I've been out of Cell Service for almost four hours at this point. Not ideal, but not unexpected.
I'm driving down US Highway 26. At its Junction with Highway 7, just south of Austin, there's construction with a flagman. He stops me, asks where I'm going, then waves me through. Just the other side of the intersection, I hear a "BAM" and a quick shudder. I'd hit a pothole where the gravel joined the paved road.
I pull into the parking lot of a nearby business and check everything out - every thing seems okay, and I drive on. A few hours later, I notice a grinding sound when I make right turns. I try a right turn again, no sound.
I come to the small town of Fossil, OR. It happens again, only now it's on every right turn. I decide it's time to book it to The Dalles. One mile out from Fossil, the grinding got worse..then worse. The WORSE. I turn around and head back into Fossil.
Fossil is a TINY TINY town. I wasn't sure what I was gonna do as it was 5PM and towns like this close up shop around that time. I found an antique store that was open, who suggested I try the gas station one block down.
The gas station attendant was wonderfully sweet and she had cell signal! (You listening, T-Mobile?!). I made some calls to my parenst just to let them know what was up, and the attendant suggested the Chevrolet dealer across three street.
The folks at Wright CHEVROLET were amazingly helpful. They didn't service Mazdas at all, and looked up places "nearby" that serviced them. One that DID in Bend, OR 125 miles in the wrong direction, and one that MIGHT in The Dalles, where I already had reservations.
He gave the car a quick once over, had a couple of ideas what might be wrong with it. Gave me a once over of what we needed to do (1) A very expensive 90 mile tow to The Dalles which couldn't be helped, and which he gave me a huge break on and (2) gave me advice on calling the insurance to see if they could take care of it.
The tow was nice, and the driver gave me a quick history of the area as we drove through it. Also even stopped to check the cables at a very scenic spot where you can see four mountains at once. In all this was the most delightful breakdown I've ever had.
We'll see how delighful this is when the bill gets to me, though.
