Iskander's arc in A Wish for Wings was actually originally based on the Robotech episode "Hired Gun." However, it changed very quickly and went it's own (way faster than I wanted it to go) way.
In the original arc, Iskander was attacking angels in revenge for accidentally killing his lover. Andrea comes across him after a fight not knowing who he is and nurses him back to health. He tells her about the reason he fights, Andrea sympathizes, but refuses to help him, until he's finally killed in cold blood by other angels, which begins her turn against Michael.
A lot of that arc is still there - but what changed was moving the "killed lover" idea over to Michael as the basis of completely escalating the war on the shadows and Andrea not only sympathizing with Iskander (who is now fighting against Michael to stop the Shadow War), but joining in and taking on his fight. But only after wondering if it's the right thing to do.
