Star Trek: Lower Decks Quick Review:
1) Is it Star Trek? I think so. But "my" version of what Star Trek is to me ended with Deep Space Nine. But it also doesn't NOT feel like Star Trek. Certainly more than, say, Discovery Season 1. I need a few more episodes to decide that. It certainly knows its lore (thirty seconds of pure Continuity Porn at the end!)
2) What's bad? Not a fan of the opening credits showing the USS Cerritos essentially being terrible and running from battle constantly. It's not the USS Murgatroid (1000000 Jenn Points if you get that reference).
3) What's good? The characterisation for a few characters is kinda two dimensional, but I absolutely LOVED Ensign Mariner. She comes across as someone who is just straight up rebelling, but you find out a reason why later in the show that works. Ensign Tendi's awestruckness was totally believable, and it's nice to see an Orion who isn't a slave-girl or a slave-trader. I think I'm in love with Dr T'Ana.
3) What's great? It genuinely made me laugh. I was totally worried it'd be more Family Guy style humor (Especially after the Nude Gymnastics Scene), but there was some good stuff there that wasn't just the potty humor I was expecting from the trailers. And the "needless annoyance" I was expecting from Mariner turned out not to be needless at all, and has a reason for being there.
4) What's geeky? They nailed the LCARS graphics and sound effects. TOTALLY nailed it.
I guess the best thing I can say is I'm looking forward to more. We'll decide if it's "my" Star Trek or "everyone elses" Star Trek later. :)
