One of the closest times I've had to my dreams coming true was working on "Closetspace UK." I was part of the Trans Comedy Award and when I got the notice that I'd made the second round, I'd begun to think about how I was going to make Closetspace for a UK audience (as well as HOW THE HELL WAS I GONNA MOVE THERE).
When I got notice that I'd made the third round, I really sat down and decided on changes I needed to make, and the biggest one was "How do I tell a story based on secrets and reveals, when you can just read the webcomic and be spoiled."
The idea I had was to tell the same "story" but change up the details. Every episode would be based on the episodes in the comic, as well as cut episodes from the TV Series outline I put together in the 90s. But the endings would be different.
This way, you can't just turn on "Episode #5" and head over to "Story #5" on the comic and spoil the ending. The biggest one being Allison's secret - which is a major driver of the Closetspace story. I actually planned to change her character completely from a transwoman who regretted her transition to the original outline's story.
I'm kind of hoping this is how Netflix's Cowboy Bebop ends up going. If you're going to tell me the same story (which I hope you don't), change it up enough that it feels fresh and new.
Also, Netflix? Got a three-year-ten-episode-per-year series if you'd like to produce it. ;)
