dolariI just spent thirty minutes outside, enjoying the cool air, the night sky and the almost full moon.
It's very quiet out there, with just the sounds of the wind, dogs barking, cocks crowing and the occasional car driving down FM 969.
One of the wonders of the night sky I've always loved is the depth of the night. How deeply you look into the cosmos, knowing full well there's millions of miles between you and the star you see...and the band overhead being you home galaxy.
Once you realize that the night sky isn't just wallpaper just above the atmosphere, you kinda open up to it. You lose yourself in the immense SIZE of it all.
This immensity calms me, and is the best way to throw me out of any mood, good or bad.
I really enjoyed being out there...it's light enough to walk around without a light.
I decided to just close my eyes and listen.
It's amazing how certain screetching birds can sound just like a woman screaming. Or how you can hear footsteps of something in the grass. Or feel people all around you.
When I was about six, my father took me dove hunting with his Teamster friends. As night fell this turned into a rabbit hunt. At midnight, we went looking for crocodiles. Six year old me...in the back of apickup with about twenty of the burliest men with rifles. You'd think I'd feel safe. But I was scared, so scared. Because there were people int he woods. There were so many of them and even twenty people with rifles couldn't hold them off.
For the first time in a LONG time, I felt all those things out there again. I did my best to rationalize it as insects in the grass making the footstepsm trees feeling like people.
But it didn't work. For the first time in a long time I felt afraid of the dark.
We will try this again some other time. I need to shake off the heebie jeebies now.
