Yes, they're good ideas.
Yes, they save lives.
No, you shouldn't force me to wear one when I understand the risks and am willing to take them.
But my main reason is I absolutely can't stand thing covering my head like hats, hoods or veils. I love biking, but wearing a helmet, to me, is like going on a hike with a shoe full of pebbles.
I also don't like nanny laws. I know the risks of biking without a helmet, but don't force me to wear them. I know the risk of driving without seat belts, but don't force me to wear them.
And for what its worth, I'd wear seat belts even if they weren't the law. They don't bother me one whit, and are good ideas.
