Let's play the Hammer Game!
Dec. 21st, 2002 04:25 amI am such a geek.
Really, I am
Why?
Cause right now, I'm watching the last two episodes of Robotech.
Now why is that geeky? Why, you ask?
Because this is episode #85. And I've watched each and everyone of them Monday through Friday, 11:30PM for the last 17 weeks.
That takes some serious geekism to do.
Not only that, but I also finished cataloging most of my tapes. All THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY EIGHT of them. Things I didn't know: I have the entire run of Tenchi Muyo OVAs without realizing it. I also have virtually every Sealab 2021 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Now why do I have 338 video tapes? Well, it started when I was a kid in the late 80s, when it was HARD to get anime. You had to copy and recopy and bootleg like mad. Now you have video companies selling the stuff off the shelf. The first 100 or so tapes are almost completely anime and Doctor Who related. The other 225 or so came from a horrible TV experience I had as a kid.
Anyone remember a series called "The Phoenix?" I doubt it. It was a show that lasted all of six episode on ABC back in 1982. And I loved it. It was about the reincarnation of a Mayan God looking for his wife while the government was looking for him.,..and he found her after six episode, trapped in a crystal. The series was cancelled before we could move on. And I've never seen it since. And I've never seen You can't do that on Television since it was taken off, and Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea. And I had only one episode of Robotech for almost a decade. I can't even GET Max Headroom anymore.
The 228 tapes are now anything and everything that catches my fancy that has ever been on TV. Shows like Let's Bowl, MST3K, Doctor Who, Super Mario Brothers Super Show. Stuff you can't get anymore. I refuse to lose something I like anymore.
So I have archives of the stuff. I have every episode of Babylon 5. In most cases TWICE.
I haven't been able to archive stuff I've liked recently...but as soon as my luck changes, I'll be back, recording stupid stuff from public access shows that made me laugh and the occasional episode of Iron Chef. :)
And I'm even MORE of a Geek. Cause I just saw The Two Towers:
Words fail me:
The Good: Frodo talking in the third person about himself at the end of the movie "Frodo wouldn't make it without Sam." His constant faith in Smeagol/Gollum because he's on his way to becoming just like him. Helms Deep...droooooooooooooool. Eowyn....droooooooooooooooool (I'm a sucker for strong women). Watching the Smeagol/Gollum fight, and seeing Smeagol dance for joy afterwards. Holy cow, this movie was good. Ents. Orcs. Stuff.
The Bad: Not enough Saruman. And while I love movies that stop, take a breath, and reflect...when twenty three separate characters do it at once, the movie sloooooooooows waaaaay doooooown. The battle at Isengard isn't resolved (yet). Deus ex Gandalf (even if he sets it up in an earlier scene, it's still deus ex Gandalf). Not enough elves. :)
The Ugly: How can someone so horrible looking as Gollum, illicit so much sympathy? Andy Serkis and WETA deserve SOME kind of Oscar.
Many thanks to the anonymous poster who gave me a case to look up. Although the more I read about my chances, the more I doubt I'll go THAT far.
