After being magically transported from the River Styx to Austin on Saturday, and a fitful five hour sleep (where I kept slightly waking up thinking ot myself "Time is an illusion, therefore, time does not exist and I can sleep another hour") it was time to hit the Smithville Ren Faire. My first.

I've gone to three Star Trek conventions (Once in uniform...don't ask), two Doctor Who conventions and one Comic Con. The last convention I'd gone to was The Doctor Who convention back in 1991.

Before we hit the Ren Faire, though, Andy and I hit a little restaurant in Bastrop to meet up with some of his friends (a really cool mother and son team). From there, on to Smithville....

Once we were in, I was definitely assaulted by the costuming, which...wow...beautiful. Several of the girls in the acting troupe were dressed as Faeries, and one had this BEAUTIFUL double set of wings - one made of grapevine with leaves, and then another set behind that made to look like butterfly wings. Most cool.

Too cool, in fact. It was FREEZING. The weather today was just bonkers. I was absosmurfly freezing until the sun came out and decided to warm us all up. More on the weather later.

We also got to see some neat crafties, and swords. Swords swords swords. I'm not a big fan of weaponry, nor of costuming. But if there's a weapon I'd like, it's the old roman flatblade swords the troops used (I think Andy called it a Gladius). If you look very carefully at AWFW you'll notice the Angel of War has one of these swords. Although I've yet to really post a good picture of it.

I didn't go near the cloaks - didn't want the heartbreak of moths flying out of my wallet like you see on all those cartoons. Next time around, though, I'mo get me one.

About an hour in, I came to the conclusion that if I got M'Lorded one more time, I would go midieval on their peasant butts (Get it - get it?). But flood therapy works I guess, as I finally didn't mind after a while.

You've not heard the Linus and Lucy Theme played, until you've heard as played by a lute. Anyone who can get an MP3 of something like that will have my eternal gratitude.

Erin, Sean, Marca and two of their friends showed up as well (One, a punk, had a COOL wig...very nice) and that's when the games finally seemed to open up.

The skies did, too. It had slowly begun to overcast all through the afternoon. And then it began to drizzle on and off. What I thought was cool was several of the faeries began dancing in the rain...and they weren't the "troupe" faeries. Very cool stuffs.

BTW, I'm a big believer of "If you've got it, flaunt it." They did. And it was good. :)

Another slightly jarring moment was at the Tomato Toss. Of course, the guy being tossed at was supposed to be an ass, but when after taunting our friend over her hair, another woman walked up to the plate. Hearing him say "Oh, it's nice to see a REAL woman today" annoyed me. But, it's his job to rile you up. When my revolution comes, I'll will have him destroyed last.

The guy who screamed at me "Hey, Queer, you gotta cock?" will be first. Bastard.

Anyways, good stuffs: The costuming was great, the Elves were a little more Vulcan than Elf for my tastes, but the Faeries were most cool. The jousters and the general "Round Table" performers were pretty darned good (Star Trek/Dr. Who Cons need something like that. Or at least more performance oriented Cosplay).

I half expected to see Dan or Syl there. Figured it'd be right up their alley.

All in all, a good time was had. I'd definately go again, this time with more that $3 in my pocket, and a goodly amount saved up for a really really really good big warm fuzzy velvet cloak. I shall have one - oh, yes, I shall have one.

Jenni, you were right - they did have stuff in my size: "Extra Shatner." ;)
