Last week I worked a whole day overtime...which is why the next episodes of AWFW and CS will have so many repeated panels. However, the paycheck for it was very nice.
Just a note about overtime. I hate it. With a PASSION. Not only do I hate it, I despise it when it's scheduled on off hours. If I leave work at 8PM, please don't schedule me for work at 8AM. Not if you want me to actually function.
However, my paycheck was huge. So I decided to finally take the plunge. Over the last few weeks of checks, I've been buying bits and pieces of upgrade for the computer (while still putting aside money for the Save Jenn's Truck Fund). In the last few month, I replaced the DVD, replaced my long since missing TV card, got a GeForce2 video card to replace the Crapola Card I had, got 512MB of RAM to replace the 64MB I had....and seeing as my bank account was HUGE...I finally did it.
I blew my hard earned cash on a Pentium 4 running at 2GHz.
However, seeing the info from Altex, it seemed all I was getting was a motherboard. So And as P4 boards need 300Watt power supplies, I needed a new one. Picked that up for $25. Looking at the image of the motherboard, I noticed it was all PCI slots. so I picked up a Soundblaster PCI. Another $50. That evening (Friday evening) I put the whole shebang together...
I'd forgotten to buy a PCI Network card...but, BEHOLD!, there was a NIC card integrated on the board! WOO! But then...so was the integrated on board sound card. Oops. Taking the 512MB of RAM from my old computer, I attempted to plug it into this machine...nothin' doin. Turns out it need special RAM.
So, next time I look on the Altex website for all this fun and joyous stuff, I'm looking for a feed back button or address where I can write "Please add more description to your website other than 'Motherboarrd for P4 2GHz."
However, after spending another $100 on new RAM (They wouldn't take back my old RAM without the packaging...bastards), I built it all together, got everything installed and running....
Holy COW what a difference that makes. Windows loads in all of fifteen to thirty seconds, menus actually WORK, AWFW and CS coloring just flew by and most importantly...
MORTAL KOMBAT II RUNS IN MAME PERFECTLY.
I'm most happy. This machine just completely SCREAMS. Now to try and get some of my money back for that extra soundcard.
Another upswing to all this is Dean has all my spare parts - he only needs a mouse, keyboard and case, and he's good.
And a third upswing is now I can put double the cash into the Save Jenn's Truck fund.
Sadly, the only thing that is still part of the original Swan Technologies system I originally put together is the case....::sigh:: I should make up a little Swan badge to put on the case.
And maybe Ic an get Dean to buy that sound card off me. ;)
