Thanks for the sympathy in the last entry, everyone. I just wish people weren't jerks all the time.

AWFW and CS are updated, but not with comics. More like...trivia or minutiae. :)

I've been meaning to do a Story So Far page for a while now, mainly because people are forgetting characters or that X happened here and Y shows why Z happened. So, since I managed to forget to draw comics this week, we have Story Time.

I had an excellent time with Steph and Kim the other day, Kim gave me $20, and Steph gave me $15 (Making an even MORE awkward position of listing them as sponsors next to my parents). With an extra $35, and everyone telling me to save my cash, I made a compromise. I bought the Genesis Climber Mospeada box set for considerably cheaper.

It's a lot grittier than it's American Counterpart, and definitely "harsher." When asked about why the citizens of a town don't call the cops on a bunch of vandalizing punks, the American Robotech says "Hoodlums like that ARE the local authorities." The Japanese versions is "Those punks kill anyone who gets in their way."

It's also got a neat way of making the aliens talk with JUUUUST slightly off words. Robotech has the Invid saying "ELIMINATE THEM!" in a frantic warbly voice. Mospeada has a flat monotone saying "DELETE THEM!"

It's also a LOT quieter. Robotech had music and dialog running through the whole show, this is a very quiet series.

Yellow has a distinct female and male voice, while Robotech used a feminine sounding male voice. And Yellow sings better songs. :)

Guess which part got cut for American Audiences in Robotech:

Annie, a thirteen year old girl is on the ground crying. Rand and Scott drive up in their cyclones to see what's wrong:

RAND: Yo, boy, what's wrong?
ANNIE: I'm not a boy!
RAND: Oh? You're a girl?
ANNIE: Don't treat me like a kid! I'm already a lady!
RAND: Hell, a kid is saying that!
ANNIE: Hey! Do a kids' breasts get this big? LOOK!

Annie proceeds to lift up her jacket.

RAND: AH! STOP IT! I SEE! DON'T TAKE OFF YOUR CLOTHES ANY MORE!
UPDATE: The more I see of Annie/Mint, the more horrified I am for the prepubescent girls of Japan.

I only saw the original JP version of Mospeada, so I have no idea how badly the American version is butchered, and I only barely remember Mospeada at all. (I was like 5...)

Is it any worse than the programming to be unhealthily thin (and have other unreasonable expectations about themselves and their bodies) that they get from American media?

I'm surprised at how much stayed in the conversion to the Robotech series. Mostly a lot of disturbing hyper-sexuality from 13 Year Old Annie was removed. The male/female voice thing Yellow did was removed and done by one male voice. The overall feel of the Japanese series was lightened, too. It wasn't so dark and dismal. A lot of implied violence is gone, too.

When I watched this segment of Robotech, I was surprised at how dark and desperate it was compared to the rest of the series...the Japanese version makes the American one look like a cakewalk.

Personally...I think it is worse. But that's because I'm horrified at the stuff they have her do. Chalk it up to culture clash. :)

Wow. second from the bottom with a mminiscule percentage for AWFW, but I'm surprised I made the referer list at all.

Some of the Japanese... deviancy... towards prepubescent girls is disturbing, but one of the things I find interesting about their view is that they force young girls (both sexes really) to be responsible for their actions and demeanor and do not, as Europe and the US tend to, absolve them off all blame and relegate them to a status of mental inadequacy simply because of their age.

Well, the incident you mentioned eems moderately harmless. I've heard of stuff that is a lot worse, just no idea if it applies to that caharacter or not.

As said, it was a verrrrrry long time ago. I remember the mecha and some of the weird organic Invid stuff and that's it. (Which is the stuff I normally note in any series really ^_^*)

I will give them that - they definately seem to have faith in their kids and elders that American and our Culture of Youth don't have.
