I HAVE A CABLE MODEM.
Now I hope my router settings are good. :D
And that remote desktop isn't blocked by work.

Remote desktop?

Yeah, remote desktop. Throws the main screen of your computer onto any other if you know the IP and the password. IT's blocked from work, but can be done through some creative SSH tunneling.

(welcome to the LJ 30 day delay mail loop)

So how does one *do* this? It'd be more than a bit useful to me.

If you're using XP, just right click on "My Computer" and go to Properties -> Remote. Then make sure there's a check mark next to "Allow users to remotely connect to this computer." Once you'd done that, you'll need to make sure your login has a password, and using the Remote Desktop function from any XP machine (START->PROGRAMS->COMMUNICATIONS->REMOTE DESKTOP), you should be able to connect to it (Internet connection, us the IP Address and local networks just use the network name).

If the computer you're calling into is XP, you can run the Remote Desktop Client on anything. But if BOTH aren't XP, there's a good program called "VNC" which does the same thing. And it's cross platform. I had Linux running on the home machine with 98 "Remote Desktop"ing into it.
