As much as I can see fundamentalist religions around, I also see what I call "fundamentalist science." While science isn't a bad thing (I mean, it more than often IS the provable truth)...I usually see people use "fundamentalist" science as a way to purposely not see the forest for the trees, to stifle "irrational" imagination and deflate "statistically hopeless" hope or ambitious plans.
I often get kidded for quoting a line from Babylon 5: “Faith and reason are like the shoes on your feet – you can go further with both than with either by itself.” I really do believe that. It allows me to dream while keeping my feet grounded, instead of working on insane impossible goals, or ignoring plans and ideas that may never happen, but could.
Your mileage may vary, but this works, and works very well, for me.
