Silly (Possible) Jenn Fact: I was responsible for naming Street Fighter Alpha, using Japanese box art on all Capcom consumer releases after Street Fighter Alpha, and the release of Street Fighter Collection 1.

Back in my Usenet heyday,I was rather popular on the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat newsgroups. To the point that I got the attention of several folks at Capcom and Midway specifically (a former Midway guy hosts my website, in fact). One in particular at Capcom was Dave Gracia.

He was the PR person for Capcom in the US, and did an early version of social network monitoring on alt.games.sf2. He chatted with fans often, always giving us the Capcom PR lines. He always responded to my reviews or questions, and we struck up a bit of a friendly respect.

Apparently, at one time, there was a bit of a row with the marketing of the new Street Fighter game, and he asked my opinion. Would I play "Street Fighter Alpha?" Or "Street Fighter Legends?"

I told him I preferred Alpha. I told him I thought it made more sense to keep some kind of "numbering" suffix to go with Street Fighter II. Low and behold,a few months later, Street Fighter Alpha comes out.

When Street Fighter Alpha was released for the PlayStation, the cover art was terrible. I posted one of my then famous "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" reviews specifically pointing out the cover art as "The Ugly." Out of the blue,I get a letter from Dave saying he passed my review around the office, and further releases would be using the Japanese art.

Finally, the one time I ever asked for anything from Capcom was during a big petition to get the original Street Fighter 2 games ported to the Next Gen consoles (At that time, the PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn). I kind of hoisted the flag on this one, too make sure Capcom saw the demand we had for it. I pointed it out to Dave, who didn't really give any kind of response that would pin down a yes or no answer, but about a year later, Street Fighter Collection came out with Super SF2 and Super SF2 Turbo. Not sure if I was responsible for that one or not....

After that our communication began to trail off. There were some secrets shared about why Capcom games that were released in Japan never came to America (Sega of America was big on the Saturn being seen as CD only system, while Sega if Japan was allowing bigger cart based games that loaded better), and, after a move to Sony, a little back and forth about the Sony release of MK3 for the PlayStation.

I like to call my Usenet days my "First 15 Minutes of Fame." Many Midway (Netherrealm, now) folks to this day still remember me to this day. Fondly, I'm hoping!
