I've worked in the Merriltown area (the dreaded Wincor years) and I know the area fairly well. The apartments here seem a little sketchy, though. Kind of upscale but hints of dumpiness like an abandonned sofa in one corner and tons of diesel trucks parked up and down the side streets. Prices are nice, though, and the area, like I said, is one I know pretty well.
There were a few apartments in the Coxville area I checked out. Very nice, about $100 cheaper than what I expected. Gated communities which I'm okay with as we're a just a little close to the Rundberg area, which is worrisome. Bran new apartments, though, still under construction.
Dessau also seems to have a lot of new apartments, but the area is still kind of underdeveloped. I like that, with it's naturey feel...but at the same time, it feels a bit remote. Apartments are down long empty roads that suddenly come to Big Apartments. Prices are abotu $50 cheaper than I'm paying now.
Pfleugerville, though, is where it's at. One apartment complex is only $10 cheaper than what I'm paying now, which isn't good, but I'm literally walking distance to a gigantic massive mall, and yet far enough in the woods to hear cows mooing. Another complex in the area is much cheaper, closer in to town, and has good access to I-35, but is also under massive contruction (some buildings are just being built).
I have an eye on a Merriltown apartment that is just where I need it to be (access to a freeway and crossways road), as well as a bit of naturey drive getting there. Prices are $120 cheaper than what I'm paying for now.
All this assumes I'll have a job in the next week or two, though...and that I dont' get that job in San Marcos. If I get that San Marcos job, I will do everything I can to move to Wimberely down the street. That's where all the Austin Hippies who lived in Hyde Park ended up, and I miss them. :D
