Daisy is a princess of Sarasaland Land in exile, currently residing in the Mushroom Kingdom.
At the end of her first game, Princess Daisy is rescued by Mario, but instead of being taken back to her castle, she's instead flown away with Mario in his...spaceship...submersible...thing. (See video below).
This is because it's not safe for her to return (in fact, the events of Super Mario Land end up with Wario running the show, as per Super Mario Land 2)and instead is taken in by the royal house of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Despite Mario reclaiming the castle, Daisy couldn't return, and in the end Sarasaland was lost. Instead, she's set herself up under the Mushroom Kingdom, where she's kept her title, if not her royal authority. Knowing she can't return, she's let a lot of her royal veneer drop, letting her inner tomboy (And that delightful Sarassaland accent) out.
