Jun. 24th, 2016 08:02 pmWatching Robotech II: The Sentinels for the first time in many many many years. It's always felt wierd to me as being "almost" Robotech, but I couldn't put my finger on why. It's not a terrible show by any means. The continuity is (mostly) spot on. The animation is really good in some spots (although really bad in others).
I think I figured it out there - everyone is so damned...well...cheery. This is okay with characters like Lisa and Minmei as well as Max and Rick. Cheery Breetai is...wierd. Cheery Miriya is some sort of pod person, to the point I think she's even a different voice actress and nothing like the Zentraedi amazon she was in Macross.
I seem to remember reading the final "movie" edit was REALLY rushed as it was done hot on the heels of cancellation while they still had production money. Maybe that's it. Or a different voice director.
Still would have loved to see the production finished up. Or read all the scripts. Or raid the Harmony Gold USA archives.
(If I hadn't spent an hour trying to get myself out of a sandpit on the way through Los Angeles, I did plan on buzzing the HG offices...I was only six miles away at the closest. :) )
