Non spoilerific Bio for Claire Upton, the first victim of the virus we meet:

Claire Upton

Pre-infection.
Claire Upton was born in the winter of 1951 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to William and Patricia Upton. She showed an aptitude for numbers at a young age, particularly in money matters. She'd used her meager allowance to plan for larger future purchases, something her tween friends didn't quite understand.

On graduation in 1969, she spent several years at Penn State University pursuing an MBA degree. Leo Shaeffer hired her for his father's investment banking firm in New York, against the wishes of the board in 1974. While she was hired, the board put her in the lowest position they had. She fought hard, but her business acumen eventually moved her up the ladder, slower than her male colleagues, but a definite rise.

Her years of jockeying for positions and a college career path that refused to take her seriously, gave her a more forceful attitude that some considered “bitchy” but she considered “cutting through the bullshit.” At the time of her infection, she was twenty nine, yet single. When asked when she would get married, her response was almost always “When I can afford to live very comfortably on my own.” She'd hoped to be there at thirty and was easily on her way to making it.

Infection.
Claire reported two flu sicknesses in 1979 and 1980. While the 1979 influenza coincided with a local outbreak, the 1980 influenza hit during the last months of summer. It's likely the Genevieve virus activated at this time.

She exhibited the first symptoms in Spring of 1981, losing her name. By 1982, after no physical cause for her memory loss was found, she was in psychiatric therapy to try and regain her quickly faltering memory. By 1983 she was losing the fight to retain her memory.
