The long version:

Starting yesterday afternoon, I noticed the brakes were lightly vibrating when hitting the brakes again. By the end of the day, it was quite noticeable. After talking with friends and dad, we decided that the brakes make just need to be "set" and I'd continue to Texas.

The brakes continued to get worse and worse today, which was part of the technical difficulties I was having all day. After I decided to go straight to Salt Lake City via freeways, I noticed that the brakes continued to get worse and worse every time I pulled into a rest area.

After being misdirected to Orem, UT, instead of Lehi, I pulled over and noticed something very strange: If I'm at a red light, brakes pressed down, and I let go and take off immediately the car makes a scraping noise and is slow to take off. If I let go, but wait five or so seconds, the brakes dont scrape, and I take off fine.

This seems to be a slow caliper, and the rotors are now warped again.

The choice was to drive directly to Washington, taking two days, or directly to Texas, taking three. I'm going to head back to Washington ASAP, no side trips, and absolutely no unnecessary stops. There's less distance to WA than TX and therefor less of a chance I'm going break down going back to WA than TX.

Really unhappy about this, but heading back to WA is already tempting fate, but TX has the potential to be REALLY disastrous.

Aaaahh! I've been following the trail backwards today, and I now see what you've been referring to. Agh, that's a tremendous pain.

For some future voyages, maybe consider joining up with a friend or two? There must be others minded to satisfy their wanderlust, and sharing driving duties would surely be helpful. (Not something I could help with, I'm afraid - although, looking at how half the world drives, I doubt anybody would notice I don't have a license =:) Down in the Bay, there's the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] bunnyhalberd, who might well be inclined to venture along to Austin and thereabouts along the way, besides being a thoroughly excellent person. ^_^

Unrelatedly, I see [livejournal.com profile] unitednoshes reached Mexico this time around.. oh, those accounts are always deliciously inspiring, and this one was no exception. (FSM, I miss having a kitchen with space.. still, the paella the other week definitely turned out very well! Quite a bit of work, though, beginning with making the stock, then picking up the additional ingredients I'd need, including bomba rice, an especially thirsty variety that soaks up around 3x its volume, versus more like 2x for most rice)

Is the imperial chariot once more in fine fettle?
