So the roomies got one if those TVs that does 60fps motion interpolation. Basically makes everything look like a soap opera. I've been trying it out on different videos just to see what happens.

Steven Universe looks really Wierd, almost like motion comics versus animation. Tron looks like a weird PBS video about computer programmers. Star Trek looks pretty decent for a 60s era soap opera.

The Star Wars prequels? They went from mediocrely written block buster movie to really well done direct to television movie.

Ergh. I saw something along those lines back on the recent trip, and at first, was wondering WTH was up - things I knew were indeed film were looking like 1970s video. And that extended into the otherwise excellent 2001 Blu-Ray. (I finally figured it out when even a DVD of Catnapped was showing similar results, but the TV was failing to quite manage with some of the scene panning, so it'd be weirdly smooth for a little bit, then judder to catch up, and so on)

Looking at some examples on YouTube, it seems like it's an effect that can work very well - there've been some great examples from MLP, processed to yield 60fps, and indeed, done well, it's an effect that greatly improves panning, or fast action. Done not so well, and it's merely offputting.

I wonder when we'll finally get high framerate film/TV downloads and discs? If it were a choice, I think I'd sooner go for 1080p 60fps than UHD 30fps.
