dolariI am not a straight ticket voter. I don't even consider myself a Democrat. If anything I consider myself a European-style Socialist on most things, with some conservative mindsets on others (more than my friends would like in some cases ;) ).
One of the nice things I like about Washington State's voting process is the candidate's statements in the Voter's Pamphlets. Statements, usually written by the candidates themselves, explain to me what they're wanting to do. And I'm pretty sure they're being truthful (I don't trust politicians (left-or-right), have I mentioned that?). And some of the stuff I've read in the primaries is wow.
I actually do read every statement for every candidate on the ballot. For everything I agree with, I give them a point. For everything I disagree with, I take a point away. If you make me say "Maybe" you get no points. If you attack your opponent, negative point (I want to know what YOU are going to do, not why I should hate your opponent). If it comes to a tie, the one with the less negatives gets my vote.
If you're unopposed, I STILL go through your statement. I'll vote for you if you get a 0 or above...otherwise I will write in "No Vote."
Now while my ballots tend to end up straight ticket Democrat (I have voted Socialist, Libertarian and even (but not very often (especially lately)) Republican), I've done so by considering the candidates, and making sure the person I'm voting for has my best interests in mind.
There's nothing more stupid than pulling the Straight Ticket "D" or "R" levers without thinking who you're voting for.
