The brakes and the rotors are not just fine, they're showing exactly the right amount of wear. The shaking problem is coming from elsewhere. Likely the tie rods or suspension. Dad's diagnosis - "Well...we can wait until it breaks, then we'll know exactly what's causing it."
The real thing I was worried about was the brakes would go out on me. That's not going to happen, so I can at least drive the car a little more confidently. With roadside assistance, I should be able to take a broken car punch a little better. And once money is saved, I can go to (a very different) mechanic for an overhaul.
