dolari30 Questions for Pride Month, Day 7: Where did you first find any information or resources on being trans?
Funny story.
It's middle school, probably seventh grade I'm guessing. That'd make it about 1986 or 1987. Our Social Studies teacher gave us all a country to learn about and write a report that we'd give a presentation on. Mine: Sri Lanka.
Now, it's 1986. I have an IBM PC jr, no modem, and, really, no consumer internet for that modem to connect to. We had these things called "ENCYCLOPEDIAS." Great big books with all the world's information in them. I had a HUGE set of these books that I actually read quite a bit. I was wikisurfing before wikis were invented through those books.
So I needed to write this report and I cracked open the book where Sri Lanka should have been in. And I started going back and forth looking for Sri Lanka when I came across "Sexual Deviations, Human."
(Disclaimer, this was the 1980s, the terms the Encyclopedia Brittanica was using, and where it placed them at the time. Not me)
Being pumped full of fresh testosterone and all the idiocy that comes with that, I was intrigued. I started reading. Learned about fetishism, BDSM and...transvesitism.
And as I read about it, I began thinking, is this what I am? It says here that a transvestite is someone who gets aroused by wearing women's clothes. I don't. But I WANTED to wear it. Maybe the article was wrong. Maybe I was wrong. But suddently, I thought, well, at least I have a name.
And I kept reading - and got to transsexuality. AND SUDDENLY THERE IT WAS. Me. And reading it, it all finally crystallized in my head. And there was a FIX.
And I was gonna take that fix.
Somehow.
