Some thoughts on Legend of Zelda Skyword Sword HD after a good six hours of playtime.

Just some minor nits. I'm running into the same problem I had with Twilight Princess HD in that the HD makes the graphics look worse. The original Twilight Princess had this dither that gave everything a kind of grainy bloom look that went away in the HD remix.

In Skyward Sword's case, there was a specific artstyle they went with to mask the Wii's limitations while giving the game an impressionistic view. Wether you were up close, or far away, the backgrounds looked like they were painted in dollops of color. The HD version still has that effect, but because all the polygons are super sharp, it simple looks like sloppy painting on crisp shapes.

The motion controls have been really tightened up. When I play Skyward Sword on the Wii, the only way I can get the motion controls to work the way I like (and likely how they were programmed to work) was to stand up and swing the Wii Remote like a sword. Most of the complaints I saw with the motion controls were people just flicking their wrists instead of doing full motions.
Flicking your wrists works just fine on the HD version. I was able to pull everything off without moving my arms at all.

One quirk, though, is that I had to recalibrate the motions controls a LOT. On the Wii, you had to recalibrate the Wii Motion Plus every so often, but every time the Wii Remote saw the Wii Sensor Bar, it automatically recalibrated. That doesn't happen on Switch, so I ended up having to recenter the Joy-Con Controllers a lot.

I love love LOVE seeing this in 60fps. The Wii was 30 fps and felt fine with all the impressionist filters and whatnot. But in 60fps, the flying really feels realistic to the point that I had that fake feeling of actual motion at times.

The sword button controls were awkward, but they made sense. I wish they'd made it "twitch controlled" instead of "directional." In the game, to do a swipe going from bottom-left to top right, you have to move the Right Analog to the bottom left, then swipe it top right. It would have been a ton better if you simply let the analog stay at it's center, then flick it to top right to do a full swipe to the top right.

The music is still the best part of the game, Fi is still awfully chatty, and the game can still make me tear up remembering the halcyon days of yore when I was still enamored at my first year at Nintendo. :)

I was just gonna play it an hour or so, since I'm streaming it Sunday. I ended up playing it for six hours. So I'm liking it a lot. :)
