Nov. 20th, 2021 01:58 amI forgot Cowboy Bebop premeired today. Told myself I'd only watch the opening. Watched the whole first episode.
The good: This was bebop. Through and through, this is totally bebop. I bought Cho as Spike, I certainly bought Shakir as Jet (I swear he's being dubbed by the original voice actor Beau Billingsly). The shots, the setups, the writing. Totally bebop. I'm in. I'm all in. MORE PLEASE.
The bad: Not really buying on on Daniela Pineda as Faye. She's actually very awesome. Completely competent bounty hunter, gets out of scrapes easily, and a bad ass. And sass. LOTS of sass. If she had another name, I'd be totally awesome with the character. What I didn't see, though, was Faye's (criminal) charm. Just lots and lots of sass. I'm sure we'll see more development as the show goes on, but she's not completely Faye for me. Yet.
The ugly: The music. And really, the music ITSELF isn't ugly. It's awesome. There are a LOT more new cues and pieces and they totally fit in with the twenty year old Seatbelts' soundtrack from the original series (the joys of getting Yoko and band back together). But occasionally, music gets pasted in from the old series that just doens't match the scene it's in. Often it pulled me out of the story making me think "Did Yoko want this piece of music here? OR did an editor cut-and-paste an old track in just to cover some silence?"
The verdict: I don't know what show the critics were watching, but that was FANTASTIC. I hope it can keep this up over the whole first season.
