With a lot of shuffling, the loss of one CD-R and one DVD-R, and a clean reinstall of Windows, I'm back up and running. I don't think I lost anything, but my fear is more file corruption than loss of files. A lof of my files are Zip Files, and if something is wrong there, the whole archive is pretty much dead. We'll see.

I'm not gonna make rent this month. The few things I have left to sell (some extra toys) aren't gonna do it. Besides, I need those toys to sell for gas money to Houston, where I MIGHT make that money back.

At least Dean has been more than helpful and understanding. We've both had to shoulder the burden for each other, and to be honest, I'm surprised I made it this long on my savings. There's food in the pantry, gas in the truck, and the internet is paid for a long while yet. We should be okay for a while.

My apartment search is beginning as well. The lease is up at the end of February, and we're all going our seperate ways. I don't have enough for a Seattle move, or the vehicle to do it, so it looks like Austin has me for another year. :) I want to move back to Hyde Park, dammit.

When did it get cold? I know on comic's day, I go into my hobbit hole and don't come out for 24 hours, but, man - 33 DEGREES?! It was just 75 at night a few DAYS ago! Wow. I need to get biking again now that I won't be overheating with temperatures like that.

download something called PAR (or par2), this will create a parity set for any files you have. That way if a file is toast, you just use the parity files to repair it. You can lose like 20% of the files.

However, for optimal recoverability, you either need a lot of files or large files over 20MB should be broken up with rar first, that way you can lose entire files and par can still recover it. Par doesn't "repair" files, it replaces it using parity data, so a parity stripes work best on smaller files.

This what people use on Usenet.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definately give it a shot since I DO have a lot of 10-50MB Zip Archives on my backups drive.
