War of the World's second series is very dark, cyberpunk, pessimistic and often a dark depressing world. This episode was about giving Debi, a girl living almost completely sheltered and protected by the main characters a birthday. It goes so hard in the other direction of fun and hope that it feels almost like an episode of the Power Rangers.
The Brooding Dark Hero for most of the second season has to pick up kids she met online for her surprise party, make decorations and find music all in an abandonned library.
The hardnosed investigator meets up with a saintly old man whose late wife used to make pastries and attempts to get the ingredients for a cake in a world with a food shortage using the late wife's recipe books and pastry ovens.
All the while, the aliens are chasing a probe that is watching what's going on and they're trying to figure out just what the heck everyone is doing in a very goofy Zed and Rita "misunderstanding everything they're seeing" way.
I love it. I do like dark cyberpunk, but this was just so wholesome it felt like a completely different show, while not actually being a completely different show.
