So, that guy at the grocery store. Was he mad that he had to stay late? Was he mad at shoplifters? Or was he mad that I was trans?

I mean, it felt fairly focused at me, but I've worked enough customer service to know that sometimes people are angry and take it out on those nearby.

That's the nefarious thing about the current rhetoric of hate being thrown at transfolk. I don't pass. I know when people who don't know me don't like me.

It's when someone you DO know seems unhappy. And you can't tell if it's because they decided to believe the rhetoric, or they're just having a bad day. And now, my evening is full of worry, probably for no good reason.

Oh, do I know that feeling. I’m not saying that current levels of hate speech have got me paranoid but, as the old joke goes, I’m not sure they’re not out to get us! But I do know how that kind of interaction can be hurtful and scary, and I’m sorry you went through that.
