"Fiction is the truth behind the lie" --Stephen King

AVERY, TEXAS. Avery (New Marysville) is on Turkey Knob Road (formerly Upper Cibolo Road) fifteen miles northwest of Boerne in far western Kendall County. In 1847 the Vincent Williamson family placed a cross on a nearby hill as a landmark; the name New Marysville, named for Williamson's home villiage in Pennsylvania, was applied to the community that developed later. In 1888 a post office was granted under the name Averysville, after a relative of Williamson's. On February 10, 1901, the town's name was shortened to Avery. The population of Avery remained between 30 and 45 from 1890 until 1914, when it reached a high of 90. Several houses marked the community on county highway maps in the 1940s. Around 1950 the population decreased to 24, and only a post office and two businesses remained. In 1990 the population was 21. The population is expected to increase in the near future, with the selloff of Williamson's original landgrant into individual ranch lots. The original Williamson Family Home is maintained by Vincent Williamson's great-great-great-great-great-grandaughter Lisa Williamson.
