It's interesting that this map appears to show most of the South uses a brand name as a generic name.

Admittedly this isn't the first time I've noticed something like this happening – remember "Rollerblades" for in-line roller skates? ;)

And I also still commonly refer to cameras mounted in or on race cars as "Racecams", despite the fact that Channel Seven [not sure about CBS] doesn't appear to use the term itself anymore. hehehe

You can't imagine how useful this is to me.

I want this map on my wall!

And I say "soda" like the other Marylanders. :)

Fascinating! The soda/pop split between California and Oregon perfectly matches the speech patterns in our family: I say "soda", he says "pop".

Interesting. Virginia and North Carolina seems to be where the vocabulary blends from "soda" in the north to "Coke" in the south. I say "soda," but I think I'll start calling them "carbonated soft drinks" instead.

If I remember right, that was a conscious decision on the part of Coke, an advertsiing this in the early 20th century that actually worked.

I'd like to know what exactly "other" is... I've never heard soft drinks referred to as anything other than soda/pop/soda pop or a specific brand name.

I'm not sure what "other" is in America, but in England they call them "fizzy drinks" (i think) and here in Aus they're "soft drinks". I tend to just say "coke" for everything, but i think that's probably because i don't drink anything else.

Generally, I say the one I mean, so I'll say 'Coke' if I mean Coca-Cola. But if I'm being general, 'softdrink' - most people around here (Australia) seem to say 'soft drink' or 'fizzy drink'. I don't think I've heard many, if any, locals refer to it as 'pop' or 'soda'.
