Basic accounts are free, and there is enough free content in SL to make your eyes bleed. I was on a free account for nearly a year, and never felt like I was missing out for lack of Lindens.

One of the big attractions, as gweeners said, is that there's heaps of free stuff for newbies. However, you're only likely to stay in SL if you make friends you can meet and share with.
