I always thought that coffee smells a lot better than it tastes. And often I can't taste it at all, because the first sip burns my tounge (this also happens to me with hot chocolate as well).

I've personally found creamer helps take the edge off. Of course, it varies from person to person; you sound like you'd be like my father, who likes coffee with his creamer. :-)
