Wow, that was quick.

In my plans, I'd planned out about $40 a day for food between Emily and me. Two Meals of about $10. Expensive, yeah, but $5 seemed too too low. So $40 a day for 5 driving days...four meals a day coming to 20 or so.... That's about $200.

Considering gas is going up much faster than I expected (I've said if we hit $5/gal my trip is sunk)...so I found away to save about $140 in cash to go to gas (juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust in case we hit $5/gal)....

Guess who's coming to dinner....

Each bag is about 2 meals for the regular joe, so I've got 24 meals here. And $140 (or so, man cannot live on MRE alone) more for gas! ...or fiber tablets...these things can clog you up....

That seems to work. I am former military so I have had to eat these things. I lost a lot of weight when these were the only things to eat. Goodluck with the trip!

You lost WIEGHT on MREs? Wow. I didn't think that was possible seeing how loaded they are. :D

They are loaded with calories but your constantly active. Plus I didn't so much like MRE's. I skip quite a few meals lol

Don't they come with a laxative for when you're someplace you can take a dump?

Either way, you should pack some laxative, or have an "off the MRE's day" or two. Also, the calorie count for MRE's is higher than you might expect. Splitting each in half should be reasonable though.

There was a rumor running around that the green colored gum was a laxative, but as far as MRE afficionados go, that's untrue. Eitherway, they've never "blocked me up" really although they do for a lot of people.

And yeah, they're kinda high in calories. 1200 per pack, and the military has it set that three provide enough food for one soldier. I just take the one and cut it in half personally. It's just too much food.

I wonder if Uncle Sam wanted his soldiers to be constipated. The plus side is that there are less opportunities for emergency trips to the nearest bathroom; however, down the line, you'll really be paying for it in other means, such as colon cancer and heart disease. Uh -- I mean "cancer, colon" and "disease, heart". (Sorry, can't resist.)

Seriously, though -- is the lack of fiber in MREs on purpose, or it's merely the quality of the food (or both)?

It really has a lot ot do with water content in the food. All the dry stuff, like crackers and cookies and breads have little to no water in them as part of keeping them stable for years. Even the wet-packs (foods with fruits, sauces, gravies) are VERY thick and low water content.

Personally, I've never been blocked up by MREs, but I always had plenty of stuff to drink on hand to down my chalky 2 year old shortbread cookie. :)

As a bonus you can wedge them in on top of your engine and have them cooked in no time, keeping you on the road more efficiently.

My dad said they used to do that with C Rations when he was in Vietnam. He even had some recipes for them.

BTW, I thought you should know, Canadian IMPs are SO SO SO SO much better than the US MREs.

Say that after you've eaten the ham omelette or the sausages and hash browns. They put me right off breakfast.

The lunch and dinner ones are all right though.

I had one that was ham and scalloped potatoes - man, I actually CRAVE that some days (like the raspberry applesauce that are no longer in MREs, I scour eBay for both of those).

Remind me when you're up here, I can probably show you how to make that.

The food? or the whole trip? :D I'm thinking of doing what I did for Trinoc and uploading a picture a day of the trip.
