As seen at [livejournal.com profile] gentle_gamer's LJ:

This articledescribes a situation in which a trans person was removed from a bisexual personals site for being transgender.

The site BisexualDatingNow.com, stated "We do not have a site appropriate for transgenders." and "It’s that T side [in LGBT] that we have not been able to fully accommodate within our program. That is shown [by the fact] that in our registration, transgender is not one of the options we provide, and we don’t provide that as such. ... That identity is not an identity we have an ability to support,"

The article also mentioned something about being a man on a lesbian dating site. I don't fully understand what that's all about, but regardless, their handling of the situation is very inappropriate.

If you're interested... they have a contact page that you can go to and send them a message containing your opinion on the matter.

I've never understood the T-discrimination in the Gay Movement, It's a bit rare, sure, but when it rears its ugly head, it's usually pretty arrogant and proud of it.

We're in the same boat people, lets not pass out life jackets only to people you think are wothy of saving.

I can kind of understand the man on a lesbian dating site thing. I assume (maybe not a good idea), that the women there do not want to be harrassed by "OMG look at teh hawt lezzy action" from guys. Granted its an online chat site, so one could easily lie about gender on the sign in sheet.

I was once told (I think possibly even on LJ) that being gay and being trans were very different and shouldn't be compared. Well, in direct terms maybe that's true. But what's also true is that all up and down the GLBTIAQ spectrum, we've got people facing the same challenges, regardless of how many letter(s) they can claim.

And on a broader level, how can we say to someone 'stop picking on us because we're X' if we're picking on someone because they're Y?

My connection's having a sulk, so I can't read the article. But the summary (and forgive me if I'm assessing this wrong) seems to point to something I've seen before - the idea that being trans is not only an identity (almost anything is, of course!), but that it's one that's somehow incompatible with the world at large.

(On the other hand, one of the people I heard supporting this view was trans herself, I guess holding some kind of separatist point of view. So, YMMV, and it takes all sorts...)

I once ran into someone in the comments section of a political site who argued that LG types (Bis weren't mentioned) shouldn't associate with transgendered people because it delayed the LGs from getting their rights. This person was pretty transphobic, though... I believe my argument was something along the lines of "Tell that to your local gay activists, not me."

Anyway, this reminds me of pretty much the only line I've liked from the Penny Arcade guys. It shouldn't be that hard to alter their (the dating site's) HTML to include a transgender option. So... "Which is it? Retards or assholes?"
