Sep. 26th, 2008 06:08 pmI'm watching the Presidential Debate on Over The Air HDTV on a crystal clear LCD. And what's funny is - it shows TOO much. Katie Couric has WAY too much makeup on, and looks like my grandmother with REALLY good hair. Jim Leher's eyes are black and solid and EVIL. Obma looks old when you can see every grey hair on his temples. And McCain looks like his left eye just had a blood vessel explode in it.
That said, the woodgrain on the podiums looks nice. :D

Date: 2008-09-27 04:59 am (UTC)On the SD picture, their wood-grain desk had a nice, even finish... Looked pretty good. The talent looked like they always did - nice smooth skin tones, thanks to a good makeup artist.
The HD picture, however, painted a completely different picture. All of the little dings and dents from years of moving the desk around were plainly visible... As well as the areas where chips in the veneer were masked with brown electrical tape. What was masked by a softer 525-line NTSC picture was made sharp and clear in hi-def!
And the talent... Again, a simple bit of foundation and some powder was not near enough for HDTV. Lines and ridges that were easily masked in the standard-def picture were garish and pronounced in HD. Seeing the two pictures side-by-side really drove the point home. HD doesn't make things look worse... we've just had 50 years to perfect making things look good in 525!
