For B5 fans - when you see this, post a B5 quote in your own journal.

Na'Kal: Breen! You've managed to import breen from Homeworld! How?
G'Kar: It, uh - isn't actually breen.
Na'Kal: The smell! The taste-
G'Kar: It's an Earth food. They are called Swedish meatballs. It's a strange thing, but every sentient race has its own version of these Swedish meatballs! I suspect it's one of those great universal mysteries which will either never be explained, or which would drive you mad if you ever learned the truth.

I actually think the only reasonable explanation for a food that is somehow completely spread across the universe and presents an identical odor profile to various senses of smell and taste would be the theory of a common ancestral race, where that food is probably our only link back to them.

That, or this species happens to find X food in the repertoire of each species to be generally identical to breen (and Swedish meatballs happen to be the human recipe that fits the bill), in which case it's a quirk of alien neurology.

I can prove this with a grant of only 5,000,000,000 credits. Won't you give? *serious, caring look* Our operators are standing by.

The Vorlon equivalent is called Ela'a and is itself intelligent. >>

This begs a question -- sentient, or merely intelligent?

If it's sentient, does it have a "breen" of some form? I think whether it does or not it supports the "quirk of alien neurology" theory, because it would be difficult to imagine a life form engineered solely as food that happened to be breenlike.

Perhaps I'm underestimating the common ancestor race, though...

Sentience is overrated. :p Pretend you're a scrambler.

I enjoy disorganized eggs as much as the next lifeform, but I'm hardly cooking them so often that I could refer to myself as a "scrambler". >.>

I'm probably misunderstanding you, I think. :P

It makes more sense if you read "Blindsight" by Peter Watts.

Heh. Sounds like a riff on the Douglas Adams joke about Gin and Tonics.
