Friday, August 8th - San Francisco, Day One
The day began bright an early, and with Bon and Gwen out doing their respective jobs, Emily and I decided to have a day on the town. Or at least see a few people we'd been meaning to.

Into town we headed....

...in time to see the fog rolling back from the hills.

And that's when we hit the first bump - the toll bridges. For some reason I got it into my head the toll bridges took credit cards. Welp. They don't. And my $3 toll turned into a $30 fine. Well, it turned into DAD'S $30 fine as the fine was applied to the owner of the vehicle (he officially still owns it). He hasn't seen hide nor hair of any citations or anything, so I guess we're both off the hook.

We really weren't prepared for what we got - the town is EXPENSIVE. We had gone into town to see a friend, Amanda, the writer of The Frozen Dagger, at her fave sushi place, Miyabi. We managed to find parking, but it was so expensive that after pooling all our cash together we got a grand total of 25 minutes of time on the meter. It took some doing but we ordered a Ton O Sushi and at the alloted time, I bought some coinage off her and grabbed a few more minutes of parking time.

Once lunch ended we all piled up into the car, and hit the Galleria, where she wanted to take us to get good hot cocoa for a night cap. And what I didn't realize was this was going to be chocolate shavings with a little bit of milk. Wow. It was like drinking a melted hershey bar. Good, but...wow. We drank our cocoa while being watched by a very angry paper mache Godzilla.

Screw you, Gamera!

It really was just a quick run into San Francisco, once we'd had our nightcap, we left Amanda for home, and headed out for Gwen's again...and then came to a screetching halt, not just in rush hour traffic but because someone set the road on fire.

Fire Bad! BURN!

And the road wasn't the only one to burn up - the poor truck overheated pretty badly in traffic. We pulled over in time before we boiled over (and we had extra water in any event). But the car next to us, an older vontage car, simply boiled over, and with no boiling tank, it simply died on the spot. Poor thing. We offered water but by the time we got there, he'd called a wrecker.

Once the truck cooled down, we moved on, finally making back to Casa Smith late in the afternoon, where we got a the grand tour (including multimedia) of Gwen's Enchated Tiki Room. And yes, the music was VERY VERY VERY important.

The night again was spent with a marathon session of Second Life...and that's when Gwen mentioned the 52 mile loop around San Francisco. We knew what the next day would bring. :)

There was a point where I seriously considered never leaving San Francisco. So so so close.
