I think I may have broken my left ankle. Usually when I hurt my right ankle I can at least put some weight on it right away...but now its been two hours and I still can't put weight on it.

If I can't put weight on it tomorrow, off to the emergency room I go.

Hopefully its just a bad bad sprain...but I have a feeling there's at least one detatched tendon in there....

Can I just have my ankles completely replaced already?

I would recommend ankle braces. The real custom-made ones would cost huge bucks, but there are cheaper alternatives.

She has one, but it's normally her right ankle that goes out, not the left one.

And considering Jenn's precarious finances, broken ankles (practically, broken anything) is something Jenn does not need. As usual, I hope for the best.

If you end up going to the ER, make it clear up front what your financial situation is, and ask if they can see you as a charity. They may say no, but it's worth a shot.

There are a couple of very good exercises you can do to rehabilitate your sprain. My physio gave me this strip of stretchy rubber like a balloon, but you could just use a bungee cord, a bit under two feet circumference i think. You put both your feet in and then slowly turn one outward so you are pushing against the bungee. Great exercise because you can do it on the computer or watching TV. There's a bit of info here: http://www.usgyms.net/Sprained_ankles.htm and elsewhere online. Then i proceeded to the balancing-on-one-foot thing. Now (over a year later) i am comfortably going up on tip-toes on one foot at a time. I'm still working on the balancing-on-one-foot-with-my-eyes-closed. There's also the standing-on-a-step-so-your-heels-are-overhanging-and-going-on-tip-toes and a whole bunch of other, similar stuff. It really helps - i feel a lot more steady on the court now than i did 18 months ago, though i am still wobblier than most players and still get the odd mini-strain when i land off-balance.

It's weird how some people just have crazy natural balance. I had a friend over once and tried one of my ankle exercises with her - stand on one foot and have someone toss a small ball in your general vicinity so you have to bend one way or the other to catch it. She just did it with no problems at all, whereas i have a lot of trouble balancing without my ankle giving out. Apparently it's something you build up over time as you strengthen the muscles there - for some people they're naturally there and others have to work out to gain that balance. I'll never be a tightrope walker, i guess, but at least my ankle isn't randomly collapsing under me any more (touch wood).

You have My most sincere sympathies...

I've broken My right ankle twice, and a couple of years ago I twisted it badly enough that its tendons and ligaments were stretched and strained quite severely, as well as having some of the calcium deposits (sort of like bone scarring) broken loose. Even now, I still have pain in that ankle and sometimes have trouble walking. As for the financial situation, I can fully appreciate that. Sans any insurance, getting hurt these days is incredibly bad luck, to say the least.
